Starbucks hunting for new Baltimore locations

(3/16/2010) Downtown workers, who are still lamenting the closure of several Starbucks locations, may have their favorite cup of Joe back soon.

Debbie Haney, a senior real estate adviser with MacKenzie Commercial Real Estate Services LLC, said the Seattle-based company is combing the Baltimore area for new locations, including downtown.

The real estate search comes more than 18 months after Starbucks announced the closure of 600 stores across the country. Among them were Harborplace and Charles Street locations, said Haney, who is representing the coffee company in most of Maryland.

This time around, Starbucks will not commit to opening a certain number of stores within an allotted time, Haney said. “They are actually working on a smart growth plan.”

Starbucks tends to favor locations with 1,700 square feet of space with a drive-through, in a visible spot at the end of a shopping center, and near a busy intersection.

In Baltimore, Starbucks has stores in Mount Washington, the west side, Harbor East, Canton, the Gallery and on North Charles Street near Johns Hopkins University.

The real estate search is a positive sign for Baltimore, which is trying to pull out of the recession that has battered retail.
